Date: August 19, 2013 Venue: DST auditorium, University of Hyderabad Topic: Democracy in our times Speaker: Prof. André Béteille, Chancellor of North-Eastern Hill University About the speaker: André Béteille is Professor Emeritus of Sociology in the University of Delhi and a National Research Professor. He is a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute. In 2005 he was conferred the Padma Bhushan by the President of India. He was Simon Fellow at the University of Manchester, Commonwealth Visiting Professor at the University of Cambridge, Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics, Distinguished Visiting Lecturer at the University of California at Berkeley, Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Study, Berlin and Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities, Edinburgh. Professor Béteille has published many important books and papers both in India and abroad. Professor Béteille has contributed articles to the editorial pages of various newspapers, such as The Times of India, The Hindu and The Telegraph, for more than forty years. His published work covers a wide range of topics from political sociology to the sociology of religion. It has been animated by his lifelong interest in the study of inequality, its various forms and dimensions and its changing patterns. His main interest, as a sociologist, has been on social analysis rather than social policy. His interest in the contradiction between norms and practices led Professor Béteille to study in some detail the nature and operation of institutions. Here his emphasis has been on the institutions of science and scholarship, although he has also dealt occasionally with other modern institutions. In his study of universities as both centres of learning and social institutions, his approach again has been comparative and historical.
