Vegerių Land – a place where the aura of sanctity and mystery has smoldered for centuries. Here, amid dense forests and untamed nature, noble princes once resided. With wisdom and courage, they rallied warriors from surrounding tribes when danger loomed. These princes were not only rulers but also spiritual guides, leading their people not only into battle but through timeless rituals that enveloped this land in an unseen cloak of sanctity. When the sun set and darkness thickened in the valley, flames rose above Vegeriai – fires burning for honor and bravery. Warriors and craftsmen gathered around the flames, celebrating freedom, nature, and their world’s order through rituals passed down from generation to generation, revealing not just faith but a resilience that united the community. Today, archaeologists working side by side with volunteers uncover every detail about this land's past. Emerging from beneath layers of earth are not only the ornaments warriors once prized but also amulets, their protectors and symbols. These were more than objects – they embodied priceless values and a mysterious connection with the world to which the Vegeriai tribes felt deeply connected. Vegeriai was also a unique crossroads of cultures and faiths – a place where Catholics, Old Believers, Jews, Lutherans, and Baltic faith followers lived together, embodying respect and tolerance. The spirit of the town became a unique legacy, passed down through generations. Tragically, in the summer of 1944, Vegeriai was claimed by the storm of war. A city that had once been a confluence of beliefs and cultures lay in ruins. Its ancient homes, synagogue, church, and temple became desolate remnants of war. Returning residents found only devastated land, steeped in explosives and blood. Today, the memory of Vegeriai comes alive as remnants of this city are drawn from beneath the earth. It’s a unique chance to resurrect it as a witness of our past and a symbol of peace. Vegeriai – our ‘little Pompeii,’ reminding us of the destructive power of war and what remains in its aftermath. More than just ruins – it’s a lesson in our values and the need for survival. Vegeriai is not just a city of the past.
