Do you make your bed every day? Orangutans do! In fact, it's an extremely important part of their day. When orangutans aren't foraging for food, they are frequently found resting and do so in nests they build. In their native ranges, orangutans build their nests high up in the trees using branches and leaves. This process is intricate and individualized, with some orangutans even using leafy branches as pillows and blankets! Young orangutans learn the basics of nesting by watching their mothers. As they move on to different parts of the forest while searching for food, orangutans will build a brand-new nest or refresh old nests they come across. Deforestation makes it harder for orangutans to find appropriate locations to build their nests and shelter themselves from harm. In zoos, where shelter is provided and they have no risk of predation, some orangutans prefer to nest on the ground. We also provide the orangutans with a variety of nesting materials such as woodwool, sheets, burlap, and blankets. You might also see them resting in the hammocks throughout their habitat. While the location and materials may vary, the outcomes are essentially the same as native range orangutans. Khali tends to make the largest and most elaborate nests of our three Bornean orangutans.
