When we think about creating sustainable communities, we must consider our textile producers. This week, I toured the Pendleton Woolen Mill Store, just South of Portland, Oregon. This Mill-End store is an outlet for end lots, seconds, and scraps from the Pendleton Woolen Mills in Pendleton, Oregon. This company has been operating for over a century, sourcing wool from ranchers in Umatilla County, Oregon, and spinning and weaving their beautiful sustainable wool textiles in Pendleton, OR, and Washougal, WA. Pendleton clothing and blankets are highly-valued, and here at the outlet, you have a chance to purchase their well-made fabrics for yourself at a substantial discount. This allows sewists like me to afford their otherwise spendy fabric, and make sure of seconds and cast-offs that would otherwise enter the waste stream.
