The Mycetoma Research Centre (MRC) — the only dedicated centre in the world, located in Khartoum, Sudan — has been destroyed as a result of conflict. What has been lost? The MRC conducted research on and treated #mycetoma, a neglected tropical disease that causes slow-growing infections, destroying skin, muscle, and bone, and often leading to amputation. We worked closely with the centre for years, collaborating with Dr Ahmed Fahal and his team on an important clinical trial: the first of its kind that showed that fosravuconazole could be a better, simpler treatment for mycetoma. But now, even that momentum is lost. The building is gone. And with it over 40 years of fungal samples critical for research and development. This video shows you what the centre used to look like.
