The Students Work Campaign, launched in 1994, engages high school students across the country in tree planting and soil and water conservation activities within their community. Landscapes in Eritrea that had once been dry and barren are now lashing green under this program. Over half a million secondary school students, of which 35% are girls, have engaged in the program. Participants have planted about 26 million trees, cultivated 6 million, and dug 22 million holes for seedlings. Over 21,000 km of terraces have been constructed by the student's summer campaign, and check and micro dams capable of holding 2 million cubic meters of water. Every year, thousands of high school students participate in the campaign, dedicating their summer break to planting trees and improving their local ecosystems within their communities. For many, this is not just a school project; it’s a personal commitment to their country’s future.
