On May 25, 1999, Slick Rick released his fourth and still most recent album, The Art of Storytelling. It became Rick’s most commercially successful album, reaching No. 8 on the Billboard 200, and No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop chart. The Art of Storytelling is considered his best and realest follow-up to his classic 1988 debut, The Great Adventures of Slick Rick. That album featured some of Rick’s best known songs such as “Children’s Story.” His other two albums, The Ruler’s Back and Behind Bars, were put together under less-than-ideal circumstances. The Ruler’s Back from 1991 was thrown together while Slick Rick was out on bail before serving five years in prison. Rick landed in prison after he tried to kill his cousin and former bodyguard, Mark Plummer. Plummer attempted to extort Rick for money and when Rick fired him, he attempted to rob and kill the up and coming rapper. Rick took matters into his own hands by trying to kill his cousin. He failed and was convicted with attempted murder. His third album, 1994’s Behind Bars, was recorded during a brief period when Rick was on a prison work release program. It also failed to reach any prominent success, save for the Prince Paul produced single “Behind Bars,” which was only single Rick ever got on the Hot 100. After Slick Rick got out of prison in 1997 he finally had the opportunity to make a proper album. The Art of Storytelling featured production by Trackmasters, Dame Grease, DJ Clark Kent and Kid Capri. It was also packed with features including Nas, Redman, Rev Run, Raekwon and Snoop Dogg. On the album’s only single, “Street Talking” Big Boi of Outkast–who Slick worked with in 1998 for Outkast’s “Da Art of Storytellin’ (Pt. 1).”– made an appearance. The Art of Storytelling reminded the world why Slick Rick became every rapper’s favorite rapper. Watch our Daily Operation post above.
