The Texas primary election votes are in, and while some party nominees were decided Tuesday, others are headed for runoffs. In the race for U.S. Senate, State Representative James Talarico defeated U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett in the Democratic primary, while Republican incumbent Senator John Cornyn and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton will head to a Republican runoff in May. In the Houston area, Congressmen Christian Menefee and Al Green are headed for a runoff in the 18th Congressional District. While in the 2nd District Congressman Dan Crenshaw lost his primary to State Representative Steve Toth. Alex Mealer and Briscoe Cain will head to a runoff election for the 9th Congressional District. The Harris County Judge races are both headed for a runoff. Former Houston Mayor Annise Parker fell just shy of 50% of the vote against former Houston City Council Member Letitia Plummer in the Democratic primary while former County Treasurer Orlando Sanchez was below the 50% mark and will face Warren Howell in a runoff. Marty Lancton was in a very close third. What are the key takeaways from all of these races? We discuss that and more, along with statewide results for Texas Ag Commissioner and Attorney General, in our weekly political roundup with Mark Jones, Political Science Fellow at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, and Renee Cross, Senior Director at the Hobby School of Public Affairs at the University of Houston. National topics included in the discussion are President Trump’s plan for the war in Iran and the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on New York’s redistricting battle.
