Optics, Photonics, Imaging & Lasers: Building the Technician-to-Engineer Workforce Pipeline Abstract: Optics, photonics, imaging, and laser technologies underpin nearly every modern imaging system – from biomedical diagnostics to space-based sensing. In this seminar, Dr. Alexis Vogt will discuss the critical role of precision optics technicians in enabling advanced imaging innovation and how Rochester’s unique optics ecosystem continues to drive national leadership in the field. She will highlight Monroe Community College’s Optical Systems Technology program – the only associate degree of its kind in the world – and its 2+2 transfer pathways to Rochester Institute of Technology, the University of Rochester, and the University of Arizona. These pathways create a seamless progression from hands-on technician training to advanced engineering and imaging science degrees. Dr. Vogt will also share insights into AmeriCOM, a national initiative expanding optics technician education models across the United States, and discuss the NSF STELLAR Engine application – one of 15 national finalists – focused on scaling workforce development and innovation across optics and photonics.
