Peter grew up without a father. In his wider family nobody read the bible, nobody went to Church and nobody who believed in God. His upbringing was very atheistic, humanistic and secular. In his teens he gradually became aware that there was something missing (an aching hollow emptiness on the inside) and began searching. Peter knew there had to be something more to life. Just after he passed twenty he prayed for the first time in his life, “God I don’t know if you are out there but if you are out three please help me make sense of my life please help me fill the emptiness I feel inside of me, please help me make sense of everything that’s going on in my life. He wasn’t thinking about Jesus or any particular religion but just calling out to God whoever that may be. That began an eighteen month process of reading and studying and researching online and in books on all kinds of spirituality in search of that truth that was eluding me. He read the Koran and New Age books but nothing seemed to fill the gap. Peter describes the turning point when he met for the first time a Christian at work who wasn’t just a. Church goer but believed the bible and had a living relationship with the Lord. He had many conversations with her about the meaning of life. Peter was hesitant about Christianity and did not find it as alluring as other religions which seemed more exotic and alluring but he knew that all paths didn’t lead to the same God and that there must be something that was true among all the religions and philosophies which do not fit together as pieces of a puzzle. They may agree in some areas but wildly disagree and contradict in others. Then on Friday 6th December 2002 Peter bought a book which claimed to have direct communication with ‘God'. He took it back and read it through into the night. The book taught there’s no such thing as hell or sin or judgment at the end of our lives because we are not accountable to anyone as we are gods. Peter felt this was what he was looking for but he wanted to know for sure so he decided to follow the author’s instructions and write his own message to ‘God’. He was sincerely searching but nothing happened and he launched into a tirade of writing out of frustration that he was not being answered. He then sat in silence. What followed in the middle of this night and three nights following took Peter into a very dark place although at the time he didn’t know it. He described in detail to Tim Vince what he experienced and how with the support of his friends after four nights he eventually confronted this ‘being’ with the challenge, "In the name of Jesus who are you?"
