Prof. Patrick Mendis is a Sri Lankan-born, award-winning American diplomat and a military professor at NATO and the Indo-Pacific Command. He has served five American presidents, most recently as a presidential advisor on national security education at the US Department of Defense. It is an appointment by the White House with the endorsement of the US Congress. He is a former US commissioner to UNESCO during the Obama administration. He also served as Secretary of State Gen. Colin Powell's secretariat director of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, managing Fulbright, Humphrey, and other international and cultural exchange programs. In addition to Defense and State, he also worked in the US Departments of Agriculture and Energy during the Clinton and Bush administrations. A first-class honours graduate of management and economics at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Prof. Patrick Mendis represented Sri Lanka as its youth ambassador at the United Nations in New York, for which he received the UN Medal for the International Year of the Youth. He is a former best commander of the Army Cadets Corps of Sri Lanka and made numerous contributions to Sri Lanka for which Prof. Mendis was also honored with an award by the Sir John Kotelawala Defense University, where he also lectured and consulted with military leaders. Prof. Mendis is an illustrious alumnus of the University of Minnesota and Harvard University, where he established scholarships. Among his many books, the most recent three publications include: "Trade for Peace," "Commercial Providence," and "Peaceful War" between China and the United States. Prof. Patrick Mendis has either taught or researched at Columbia, George Mason, George Washington, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Maryland, Minnesota, and Yale Universities in the United States. He also taught at over 25 Chinese universities -- including Fudan, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Peking, Renmin, Shandong Tsinghua, Tongji, and Wuhan Universities. For his contributions to China's national development and education, he was presented with the prestigious International Confucius Award. Prof. Mendis has visited all 50 states in the United States and every province in China. He has worked in and traveled to over 140 countries and authored more than 300 books, journal articles, newspaper columns, and government reports. Recently, he has been appointed as a distinguished visiting professor and honorary fellow at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura to celebrate the 30th anniversary of establishing the Patrick Mendis Prize at the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce. Currently, Prof. Patrick Mendis is serving as the inaugural Taiwan chair and distinguished visiting professor of international relations at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland as well as a distinguished visiting professor of transatlantic relations at the University of Warsaw in Poland.
