This week it’s Catton parkrun, and I’m running with my mate Jimmy, my long suffering running buddy of 19 years (most of that wasn't us running, we were both fat for some of it). Our daughters grew up together, we’ve shared countless miles (always whilst wearing headphones and ignoring each other like proper blokes), and tomorrow we’re lining up for a 10 mile race, so today’s plan was…sensible, except for the last 500 metres where Jimmy mugs me off. Naturally, we decided to try and run a 24 minute parkrun without looking at our Garmins. No pace checks, no reassurance, just vibes, experience, and mild panic. Jimmy does the filming, I provide: • A full display of my wonky leg (you’re welcome) • The origin story of mine and Jimmy’s friendship (running husband) • Repeated reminders of how much quicker Jimmy is than me, the twat It’s a proper parkrun run, chat, friendship, bad decisions, and two 50 year olds pretending they still know exactly what a 24 minute pace feels like.
