We all suffer and experience sorrow as a result of loss in one way or another. It’s only human to do so. Some of us suffer a lot while others seem to have it easier but at the end of the day we all suffer the loss of loved ones or things we have worked very hard for. In our day and age sorrow has become so common we exert ourselves to experience its opposite, happiness, as much as possible. In fact there are entire industries dedicated to delivering happiness to people. Can we ward off sorrow? If so how? Can we find some valuable advice to deal with sorrow from within the Islamic tradition? In the middle of the 9th century one Abu Yusuf Ya‘qub ibn Ishaq Al-Kindi, “the philosopher” as he referred to himself, penned a remarkably practical essay answering precisely these questions. It was called “On Dispelling Sorrow” in which al-Kindi gives useful advice on how to banish sorrow from one’s life and invite more happiness. One of the themes that he addresses is how we can remain happy in the face of material loss. His advice is as relevant today as it was 1,200 years ago.
