Location: Novigrad na Dobri, Karlovac Region, Croatia Music: Inspire by Liborio Conti Visible from the highway from Zagreb to Rijeka stands an old man who resists the adversities of all times - Novigrad Castle on the Dobra River. Dated back to 1193 it was first mentioned in records in the 15th century when it became the property of the Frankapan family. After the Turkish invasion in 1543, it was burned and demolished. It was subsequently renovated and expanded in the style of a comfortable noble residential palace. Emperor Joseph II. also stayed in the castle during his journey to the sea. The castle suffered its greatest misfortune during World War II in 1944, when it was burned and demolished by partisans. Since then, it has been systematically deteriorating, even though it was declared a cultural asset in the 1960s. The restoration of the castle began in 1994 and is still ongoing. Near the castle, the old wooden bridge over the Dobra River was replaced by a stone bridge with ten arches in 1730 during the construction of the then modern Karolina road, which connected Karlovac with the Adriatic Sea - Rijeka and Bakar. The Bridge on the Dobra River represents one of the most valuable examples of ancient Croatian bridge building.
