TOS can cause a wide range of symptoms, from pain and numbness to weakness in the shoulder, arm, and hand, making it important to understand the different forms of the condition to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. We begin by exploring the five main types of TOS: Neurogenic TOS: The most common type, caused by compression of the brachial plexus, a network of nerves that controls sensation and movement in the arm and hand. Symptoms can include pain, numbness, and weakness in the arm, often worsened by overhead activities. Venous TOS: This type results from the compression of veins in the thoracic outlet, leading to swelling, discoloration, and a feeling of heaviness in the arm. It may also cause pain and dilated veins. Arterial TOS: Caused by compression of the subclavian artery, leading to reduced blood flow to the arm.
