Week 175 - Sāmaññaphala Sutta: Fruits Gained by Truly Living the Life of a Recluse - Part Four (DN 2) (Recorded on March 14th, 2026). PDF link to a free digital copy of the Sutta can be obtained from the website: https://www.mindreleased.com/pali-suttas On this fourth and last session devoted to the Sāmaññaphala Sutta, Bhante Candana went over the latter sections of this giant sutta, thus completing it fully. We saw in today's session Lord Buddha laying out to King Ajātasattu, one by one, the many amazing and wonderful benefits of leading the life of a recluse, the epitome of which is Arahantship itself, whereby the heart is fully cleansed of greed, hatred, and delusion. In this latter section, amongst the many benefits of leading the Holy Life, Lord Buddha specifically mentions the jhānas, the different levels of mental purity and concentration, as well as the many psychic skills and abilities one is able to attain through meditative practice, including the ability to see and hear forms and sounds beyond the human realm. Yet, we are reminded once again, that none of these skills are capable of freeing one from suffering, because it is only through the complete elimination of ignorance from the heart, by the understanding of the Four Noble Truths, that one can put an end to the cycle of Samsāra.
