The Science: The different densities of various materials will affect the amount of material you can pack into your center column. The center material column fits approximately 16 ounces of dried plant material. The density of your plant material will affect its packing ability, as well as its overall weight per volume. Grinding your material will also affect how much you can pack inside the column, increasing it, as well as how long it takes to recover. The tighter you pack your material, the longer it will take to recover your butane. Tighter packed material, as well as ground material holds more liquid butane and will slow down the recovery process as the liquid has to evaporate into a gas from within the plant material, without the aid of hot water as occurs within the lower evaporation chamber. There are different extraction recipes result depending on how much plant material you place in the column. Looser packing of the column will allow the user to “quick wash” the material, where grinding and packing will almost always require a “soak” as the butane will take time to filter through the densely packed material. Grinding material also exposes the interior of the plant, which can be either beneficial or detrimental depending on your desired extraction.
