President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has described the safety and security of judges, magistrates, prosecutors and legal practitioners as a serious concern. She said Namibians must confront the threats that undermine the effective operation of the Judiciary and reaffirm its independence and constitutional role. Nandi-Ndaitwah was speaking at the opening of the 2026 Legal Year in Windhoek on Thursday. The President welcomed the establishment of a task force to review security challenges within the Judiciary. “No officer of the court should be required to discharge their duties under fear, intimidation or threat,” she said. Her remarks come amid the ongoing case of northern-based Control Prosecutor Justine Shiweda, who was allegedly attacked with acid and shot in October 2025. The attack is believed to have been triggered by Shiweda’s decision to deny bail to an alleged criminal syndicate “kingpin”, despite an alleged attempt to pay a bribe. A number of suspects have since been arrested and are in police custody, while Shiweda’s condition is reportedly deteriorating due to the injuries sustained, and he is in the Intensive Care Unit. President Nandi-Ndaitwah said that where dissatisfaction arises with a judicial decision, the justice system provides lawful avenues for appeal and review. “No individual or group should ever take the law into their own hands. Respect for the courts is respect for our own constitutional order,” she said. #NBCNews #nbcdigitalnews #nbcDSTV282 #nbcGOtv20 #nbcPlusApp
