The Karabakh Horse is a rare and ancient breed from the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan. It is a light riding horse, standing about 14.2–15.2 hands high, with a slim but strong body, fine head, and expressive eyes. Its most famous feature is the golden-chestnut coat with a natural metallic shine, though bay and gray also occur. The breed is admired for its speed, elegance, endurance, and gentle temperament, making it excellent for riding, long-distance travel, and sports. In history, the Karabakh Horse is considered one of the oldest breeds of the Caucasus, with origins going back over a thousand years. It developed through the influence of Persian, Turkoman, and Arabian horses, bred by local nobility for war, hunting, and prestige. Karabakh horses were highly prized, even gifted to royalty and used in races. However, wars and modernization caused their numbers to fall sharply in the 20th century, leaving the breed endangered. Today, Azerbaijan treasures the Karabakh Horse as a national symbol, with breeding programs dedicated to preserving its bloodline and cultural importance
