The pre-1960 "Le Hoyo" is a series within the Hoyo de Monterrey brand created around 1940. - The cigars in this line up are generally slender until the release of the "San Juan". It has a ring gauge of 54, and a length of 5.9" (150 mm). This cigar was a 2014 release, and still continues to the present day. The factory name is : Geniales/Robusto Extra. History When Jose Gener was 13 years old, he emigrated to Cuba from Spain in 1831, where he was sent to work on his uncle's plantation in the Vuelta Abajo. 20 years later, he started his own cigar brand in Havana called... "La Esepcion". Using the profits from this brand in 1860, Jose Gener purchased a farm in the Monterrey valley in a town called "San Juan y Martinez" located in Vuelta Abajo - which turned out to be one of the best tobacco farms in the region. Then in 1865 he registered the brand "Hoyo de Monterrey". Translation "the Hole of Monterrey" because of its concave shape. The entrance of the farm, at the top of the gate it reads "Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1860." With the growing population of cigar smokers in the UK, along with the exceedingly popular brand. His plantation and manufacturing grew along with it. Sadly, Don Jose Gener y Batet would pass away in 1900 while in Spain. Lutgarda Gener (His daughter) would take over the company and run it for another thirty years after. In 1931 a big firm called "Fernandez, Policio y Cia" purchased both cigar brands (La Ecepcion and Hoyo de Monterrey) The reason given for selling off their cigar brands was to focus on the family's sugarcane property's and plantations. The two newly purchased brands would be added with two other brands called "Punch and Belinda". After Ramon Fernandez passed away, partner Fernando Policia left Cuba in 1959, where he moved to Florida and sold his cigar lineup to the Villazon family. From there the Punch, Balinda and Hoyo de Monterrey "non-Cuban" counter part would be created. Today, Hoyo de Monterrey is still produced in Cuba and maintains the "Global brand" status. The standard 2003 band is on most of the cigars with the exception of the "Double Corona" - this band is still from the 1960s version where it displays the name "Jose Gener" where it should say "Havana Cuba" on the sides. The San Juan band has the 2003 version band with an added bottom section that reads "Serie Le Hoyo". Up till 2005 they were a bandless sub brand.
