From the tin, the flakes are a little broken apart but not quite a broken flake. The flakes have moisture, but need no drying time. I would caution anyone who plans on drying theirs to be careful, as you don’t want to lose any of the topping. You can pick out the sweet honey in the tin aroma immediately. It is tangy as well. I can smell the boozy quality, but isn’t an alcohol powerhouse. I can smell a little bit of the Red Virginia and some sourness from the Oriental. But mostly, a delightful honey. There is as much topping in the flavor profile as there is tobacco. Each is as complex as the other, and both work together in perfect harmony to create a rich and enticing experience. The honey is soft, sweet, and dare I say elegant? Aging in rum barrels gives the honey a warm vanilla like flavor that compliments the fruity and floral elderberry. The silver tequila compliments the natural rum taste that has been imparted into the honey. Now onto the tobaccos. The Red Virginias offer tangy and sweet dark fruit flavors. It reminds me of dried cranberries. The Bright Virginias pair well with the honey topping to support the sweetness and add brighter notes and citrus. The Orientals have been added in generous quantity and add a lot of additional complexity to the blend. They are very floral, and this aspect is enhanced by the elderberry mentioned before. They offer some tang, a few sour notes, and spice. As you smoke through the bowl, the toppings begin to fade, though they never go away. When this happens, the nuances and complexities that are lost in the topping is replaced by nuances and complexity in the tobaccos as they dqeepen in flavor. What I was happy to discover, is that not only is Sun Bear Navy Cask highly complex, it also smokes with ease. I had no trouble lighting the blend and it required minimal relights. It’s smoked cool and without bite. At one point I pushed it to see how it would respond, and even though the pipe became warm, the blend never became harsh. In my opinion, as far as complexity and how easy it is to smoke goes, this is the best Sun Bear yet.
