I made my own AR-15 over the last 8 months building it bit by bit as I bought parts month by month. Building your own AR-15 is lots of fun and allows you to get exactly what you want. It can often save you money in the long run especially if you buy an affordable, off the shelf, AR-15 (like a S&W M&P Sport) but plan on upgrading things such as changing out the plastic hand-guards to a free-float aluminum one. I was able to get a shorter 14.5" barrel rather than the more common US legal 16" barrel on most off the shelf rifles, and I got a free-float hand-guard. I got the rifle how I wanted it, saved a little bit of cash BUT I also got to learn the in's and out's of every single part inside the platform. I decided to go with a 14.5" barrel (no legal NFA issues in Canada regarding barrel length!) and a 10" keymod low-profile aluminum hand-guard. Standard 6-position "M4" stock and a standard aluminum "mil-spec" A2 style lower. Gas system is carbine length with a low-profile block and of course, it's chambered in 5.56 NATO. Part of me really wanted to do an M16 clone with a 20" barrel, triangle plastic hand-guards and a fixed butt-stock. But this combination ended up being cheaper, easier to find parts for (M16 style furniture can be hard to find) and of course made the rifle overall shorter and less weight. My range only goes to 200 yards and at that distance the barrel length will make very little difference. So far I've only put 20 rounds down the pipe, cleaning the barrel both before and after (breaking it in) but it has run just fine so far. Here in Canada we are usually legally limited to 5 round magazines on semi-auto, center-fire rifles but thanks to a legal loop-hole in the way the laws are written we can legally use 10-round "AR Pistol" magazines in any AR-15 platform rifle. They are fairly common and affordable up here and so this is another bonus to having a rifle that takes AR-15 pattern magazines.
