Marik Ishtar held hatred in heart for the Pharaoh - And for good reason, as he and his family lived a life of suffering in his service. Marik, however, refused this unfair fate and set off on a crusade to defeat Yami Yugi so that he could claim the title of Pharaoh and free himself, and his family from their duty as Tomb Keepers. But because of all of the pain, hurt and hatred Marik had endured throughout his childhood, he also had a second personality known as Yami Marik - Who was even more twisted than the regular Marik and was only held back by the love that he felt for his family.
