Mulhouse (Mülüz) is a city located in the Alsace region of France, neighboring Basel and Colmar, and situated near the Rhine River, which forms the German-French border. It is located in the Haut-Rhin region in the south of Alsace and is Alsace's second-largest city after Strasbourg. An independent region until 1798, Mulhouse changed hands between France and Germany over the years, eventually becoming part of France after World War II. Mulhouse has historically held a significant industrial position, contributing significantly to the French economy, particularly in the automobile and chemical industries. Mulhouse is also renowned for its museums. The Cité de l'Automobile (Musée national de l'automobile) and the Musée Français du Chemin de Fer (Cité du train), boasting the largest automobile museum and railway museums, are particularly noteworthy. Mulhouse is also the seat of the University of Upper Alsace, which houses the secretariat of the European Physical Society (EPS). The Cité de l’Automobile, which contains the Schlumpf collection, the Cité du Musée Français du Chemin de Fer (French National Railway Museum), the Electricity Museum (Electropolis), the Printed Textile Museum (Musée de l'impression Sur Etoffes), the Radio Museum, the Ceramics Museum, the Alsace Ecomuseum, the Bioscope, and the Museum of Fine Arts, which specializes in 19th-century fine arts, are among the city’s important museums.
