Colorectal Surgery involves the surgical treatment of colonic and rectal disease. Usually Colorectal Surgery can be treated by three means, by open surgery and we do dissection and whatever surgery is required. The other one is laparoscopic surgery where we use keyholes and laparoscopic instruments. So the surgical principles remain the same especially if it is a malignant disease or a cancerous disease, the surgical principle is not evaluated and the advantage of laparoscopic or robotic surgery is deep inside the pelvis when we are dissecting the rectum, it will be much more easy and much more visible and dissection will be much more smoother and bleeding will be better with laparoscopic surgery. Recently by robotic surgery has come where like laparoscopic surgery they will be using equipment and the robotic hands will have much more flexibility to work deep inside the activity and it is much convenient for the surgeon who is doing it because he will be sitting and doing the procedure rather than standing and doing it. So that will be much more comfortable especially if it is a prolonged procedure. For the patient there will not be any benefits except that the dissection will be smoother and it requires and specialized training everybody will not be able to do it and the cons are that it is much more expensive and more time consuming than laparoscopic surgery, as it requires a different type of set up and only a few centers with a real good reasons to give similar results. Result wise it is not superior to laparoscopic or open surgery but probably the dissection part will be smoother and easier.
