Some of their common names include Grinnell, Swamp Trout, Mudfish, Freshwater Dogfish & Choupique. However, despite the many names, the bowfin is a relatively unknown fish. Which is a same, because with their sharp teeth, strong jaw and powerful body they are some of the most fun fish to catch! Sinkers: https://amzn.to/2SK7jye & https://amzn.to/35LL5Rx This provides a variety pack of egg sinkers and other sinkers, so you can vary how much weight you need. I use about an ounce where I fish, but based on different currents you may want more or less weight. Leader Line: https://amzn.to/3ccG6ff 50 lb mono is my go to for leader line when going for bowfin in rivers. I generally tie about a 5 - 6 foot leader off my main line, whatever is necessary to get that bait right above the bottom. I like the thick leader line because those teeth can cut through my main line. Hooks: https://amzn.to/2zmXZJq I pretty much exclusively use circle hooks for bowfin with either live or cut bait. Don't need to set the hook hard, just add tension and the fish will hook itself. Swivels: https://amzn.to/2YJYSqu Pick the right swivel based on what size fish you are going after. There are helpful swivel guides if you google them and go to images. Beads: https://amzn.to/2YK6EAj A bead is necessary so the weight does not rub on the knot attaching the swivel. Favorite Catfishing Rod & Reels: https://amzn.to/2WC5tQN, https://amzn.to/2Wf7qE5, & https://amzn.to/2L8liJJ If you are just getting into bowfin fishing here are some great options! The Penn Fierce or Battle II is my go to rod for bowfin. Most of the bowfin I have caught could be reeled in on a 4000 style setup, but you could probably get away with 2000 or 3000, if you already have that. It'll just be a better fight! Cast Net: https://amzn.to/2y61aod I like the 5 foot cast nets. Not too big that you can't throw it in confined situations but wide enough to increase your chances of catching fish. Landing Net: https://amzn.to/2L7uSwm Once you get the bowfin out of the hole and to the surface a landing net is very useful to throw the fish in. Once they get to the surface they often roll around a lot, so having a net to put them in decreases the chance you miss them. GoPro: https://amzn.to/2WdHoB5 Recently upgraded to the GoPro Hero 7 Black - love the quality and built in movement stabilization.
