Treating Tusker Elephant suffered with Abscesses all over the body after a duel with another tusker

In this video, we bring you the story of a bull elephant who got hopelessly defeated in a vigorous fight with another bull elephant during ‘Musth’. ‘Musth’ is a periodic condition that male elephants go through once a year. During this time, their testosterone levels can be, on average, 60 to 140 times greater than the other times of the year. This is a massive rise in their reproductive hormones which makes even the most placid elephants become violent towards other elephants and humans. These male elephants fight with each other to gain dominance either till one dies or leaves the territory. There is not much of a difference in the behaviour of a Musth elephant whether he is wild or domesticated as this hormonal surge could sometimes attack even their own calves. In our situation, this tusker got injured in a deadly confrontation with another tusker elephant while both were in Musth. Defeated in their dominance - combat, this one had to retreat with severe injuries all over his body. While on his defeated journey, he was noticed by some people from the nearby village. They called the wildlife office in the area and informed them about this tusker who is showing less movement, and deep wounds all over the body out of which most were grossly infected with maggots. They prepare a sedative drug and dart it at the tusker, using a dart gun. The tusker sense danger and start moving towards the forest, with the medicated dart pricked on him. The medicine gets to work immediately and within a few minutes, it takes full effect, immobilizing the animal due to sedation. The officers observe the tusker for a few minutes and as his movement has stopped, one officer approaches the animal and pokes him with a stick, just to confirm that he is fully sedated. The rescue proceeds towards the animal and starts giving all the relevant medicines including antibiotics, multivitamins, and painkillers. All these medicines are prepared on the spot by veterinarians, according to a standard formula made according to the elephant’s body size. As elephant lovers, you may wonder how an elephant in Musth can be identified. Look at the temporal glands! These glands are located between the eye and the ear. They will discharge a thick tar-like secretion, staining the cheek area black. This is a sign of excitement or even stress. This fluid, along with the constant dribbling of a highly odorous urine stream, gives off a scent that shows females they are ready to mate. Apart from that, they will also try to keep their trunk over their tusks in order to try to relieve pressure on the temporal gland and generally keep their head higher than their shoulders. In terms of behaviour, it is said, that,Musth is linked to sexual arousal or establishing dominance. Wild bull elephants in Musth produce a characteristic low, pulsating rumbling noise which can be heard by other elephants, for considerable distances. This not only attracts the female elephants in heat who tend to reply with a signaling vocalization but also silent avoidance behavior from other bulls and non-receptive females suggesting an evolutionary benefit to advertising the Musth state. A musth elephant, wild or domesticated is no different. Sometimes, the zoos that keep adult male elephants keep them isolated in strong, purpose-built enclosures during this season. Alternatively, some are even kept tied to a strong tree and denied food and water or put on a starvation diet for several days, until the Musth passes. This method greatly shortens the duration of Musth from about three months to about 5 to 8 days. Once the medicines are carefully injected, their next task is to clean the magot-filled deep wounds in the body. However, cleaning these wounds in this place, in this condition is difficult. Besides, the tusker has been sedated for quite some time now. It is could be dangerous to keep him sedated for some more time. Therefore, They decide to tackle this in the next treatment, which will be scheduled in a couple of days. To hold on until then, they spray an antibiotic on all the wounds. They also spray medicine to destroy the maggots and their formation. This will help the wound dry up eventually. Now, the basic treatment is over. Therefore, they revive the elephant. The officers are on alert about this tusker’s improvement. They will come back another day for the next treatment.
