DIY Stoves and Comparisons (Buddy Burner and Pop Can) - forestrogue Instructionals

First off, sorry for the late upload, but as you can see from this episode, there was a lot of data to compile and probably one of the most complex episodes I have done yet. And since there is only one of me, I had to do everything including making the graphics and so on. But enough excuses. In this episode we are building and testing 2 popular stoves. Compare there heat output through boil times, as well as list off some of the Pros and Cons we noticed in our testing. While my methods are not super scientific, the results will only vary only slightly. For those of you who claim your stove is better, that's great! Please, make a video response. I would love to see your own stove design in action. Keep in mind the fuel I was using was simply fondu fuel which is basically methyl alcohol. I did however in the last few days get some new fuel for this stove, and that is when I discovered finding Denatured Alcohol in Canada is very difficult. I consulted a number of chat forums and blogs and determined getting some Methyl Hydrate, which is essentially the same thing as the fondu fuel, but with no dye, would be a simpler rout to go. I have use exclusively fondue fuel on my original penny stove for years, so I know it does work. I hope I may be able to find some DNA to try on this stove, as it seems to have a lot more energy, and can cut down boil times. When I was still in the process of making this episode, I ran it by some people and friends. I was surprised to get a comment stating "Why go through all that trouble, why don't you just make a fire? Burn wood, like a man!" I know many of you are already face-palming as you read this. For those of you are serious, here are a few reasons. First: Sometimes its not possible to have a fire, perhaps there is a fire ban in the area. To have an open fire would be incredibly irresponsible, not to mention illegal, depending on where you are. Second: Perhaps you are in an area with very little available fire wood. Amanda and I did a shoebox challenge, where we were gone for 48 hours, and we could only bring what we could fit into a shoe box. We ended up on top of a mountain. There was very little wood up there, and to chop down the trees we found would have been very irresponsible. All the trees where many times older than we were, and half our height. I could go on, but I hope I got the idea across. Remember to always practice safety around fire and flammable fuels, treat them with respect. Gear used to film this episode.
