Hi, this is Paul Thompson, county Extension agent with Clemson Extension Service and I’m here in the Chester Community Garden and today I wanted to talk a little bit about some fruit tree problems. To start off with, we have a plum tree that was very productive this year. We’ve finished picking all the plums, but while picking the plums, we noticed that we have a disease that’s very common on plum trees, especially, and it’s a disease called Black Knot. Black Knot is a fungus. It forms a canker on the stem. Eventually it’s going to kill the branch beyond that, so when you see Black Knot, you want to prune it out so that it doesn’t continue to spread. Go several inches down below where you see the fungal problem and go ahead and prune it off and get rid of it and throw it away with the household garbage or just get it way out of the area. It will produce spores that will re-infect the tissue as the new buds re coming out in the spring. There are some fungicides you can use as preventative if you’re having particular problems with it. Normally, if you just are very observant and you do some pruning early on, you can really limit its spread. So I’ll be working over this tree to remove all the rest of it that I see.
