Titanium vs. Niobium Aura Quartz | Rock ID Explained 🔮

Aura quartz isn’t always super shiny — especially when niobium is involved, or when the crystal’s natural surface is dull and doesn’t take the metallic coating evenly. In this video, I compare titanium aura and niobium aura quartz side by side to show how surface texture and metal vapor coatings affect the final look. Some crystals shine on all sides, others have mostly dull surfaces, and sometimes you’ll even see clear quartz underneath where the aura surface is thin. This clears up a recent debate in a rock identification group where a cluster was mistaken for goethite and hematite on quartz from Graves Mountain. Those specimens clearly have other mineral crystals growing on the outside of quartz. But aura quartz is easy to identify once you know what to look for. It is a very thin plating of metal on the outside of quartz, preserving the original texture of the quartz faces.
