How to Design Guidelines for the Responsible Use of AI in your News Organisation

AI is being used in all parts of the journalism process from news gathering to production and distribution. There are risks that can arise at various stages of AI deployment and in different stages of the news process. How might we design a clear set of guidelines to mitigate these risks in our news organisations? One model is to create ethical guidelines for the use of AI. The AI + Automation Lab of Bayerischer Rundfunk in Germany took this approach to guide their day-to-day use of AI and automation, while the Partnership on AI places importance on documenting processes, creating ethical guidelines for synthetic media as well as forthcoming recommendations for how AI can be deployed ethically to support local news. In this workshop, journalists and technologists from Bayerischer Rundfunk and from the Partnership on AI will share their experiences and run you through a set of questions you need to reflect on before beginning to create similar guidelines. At the end of the workshop, you will be equipped with the knowledge to begin creating guidelines for the use of AI and automation in your own news organisation.
