CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) - A big day for the team that treats kidney patients and those who are on dialysis at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. They are now able to offer support to patients at other hospitals through what's called "Tele-Nephrology." The team showed Local 12 how they were now able to consult with patients and providers at the Meadowview Hospital in Maysville, Kentucky where they currently don't do dialysis on patients. Dialysis is a process that filters the blood when the kidneys don't work properly. Officials showed Local 12 a demonstration with the CEO of Meadowview. It showed how they can now see a patient and consult with them. The CEO said that eight out of ten patients that come in to Meadowview who are on dialysis have to be transported to other hospitals for care. Or at least they did, until now. Director of Nephrology, Dr. Charuhas Thakar, said, "Exactly, so we have a dialysis company that provides the equipment and the nursing support, and essentially the medical support comes from here in Cincinnati." The team said they hope to expand the service soon to kidney transplant patients as well. That can save hours of drive time for patients and more importantly, get them care quickly if needed.
