A quick 30 minute flight from Athens.To us, off season was just as good or even better than summer. If you don’t like the crowds, then off season is for you as well. Even though lots of places were closed, we didn’t feel like we missed anything other than some of the fancy restaurants and hotels. All in good sacrifice since we didn’t have to wait anywhere and lines were little to none. Check out where we ate and where you should NOT EAT! 1. We stayed in Fira. We are glad we stayed in Fira due to the ease of the bus from the airport, which took about 30 minutes. If you are staying in Oia, it is an extra 45 minutes to an hour on the bus, unless you take a pricey taxi. Fira also is the main town of Santorini so naturally more businesses and hotels are open, and not so much of a ghost town like the others. Fira is definitely the typical place that you think of when you think Santorini, with the majority of houses being whitewashed and blue. Although Oia has a wonderful view of the sun set. It seemed to us equally as beautiful from Fira if not more 2. The bus is €1.60pp and a first class coach, we were very comfortable. Keep in mind it is cash only. The main routes on the bus go from the airport to Fira, Fira to Oia, then back to Fira and the airport. There are stops along the way in case you walk to Imerovigli for example, just look out for the bus signs and take a picture of the route and the time tables at the main bus station in Fira. 3. Off season is great, but it comes with the majority of things being closed. We ended up with a great hotel despite there only being a small handful selection. Most of the places that you would expect on the cliffs with pools close to do renovations, maintenance from Nov-March. Most pools are drained during this time but we got lucky that our pool was still open (even though we did not use it). We also didn’t have many options with restaurants, but to this day some of the best meals I had in Greece were the few restaurants we went to in Santorini so we were in no way disappointed. 4. Oia is the 2nd main town of Santorini. It is definitely more touristy and during off season not as much is open. Personally, I think Oia was the most beautiful out of all the towns because of all the colors. The bus ride from Fira to Oia was so easy and only about 25 minutes, we ended up going to Oia every day 5. Be careful of restaurants taking advantage of tourists! Although we loved most of the meals we had in Santorini, we had one that took advantage of us, and out of all meals it was breakfast. We had to stop in this restaurant because it started pouring rain and thought it was okay to order an omelette and a coffee. How much could it be? The owner ended up bringing us 2 omelettes although we ordered one and some pita, which again, how much can pita cost! When he brought the check we were astounded to see the total come out to €77. He also on the spot told us his credit card machine was not working so we had to pay cash. Be aware! Later did we realize the place had 1 whole star on Google Reviews 6. Rent an ATV if you want to go to the beaches! For a whole day we paid $20 which was a great deal. To rent a scooter you have to have a motorcycle license, but a normal drivers license for an ATV. The bus goes to all the beaches, but waiting an hour or potentially missing the bus is a hassle, besides, ATVs are more fun.
