SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Susana, sister of inmate: "My brother has been in jail for a year and nine months. There is nothing in there, he was supposed to be in there for only eight months and he is still in there without a trial date. There is nothing, they simply haven't done anything. He is hurt, we are all hurt. They are as hurt in there as we are out here." 13. Wide of prison building STORYLINE: A twelve-day hunger strike held in nearly thirty prisons throughout the province of Buenos Aires ended on Wednesday, after authorities agreed to meet inmate demands. The prisoners were protesting against what they called an "unnecessary delay" in handing down judicial rulings to the prisoners held without proper sentence. Susana, whose brother has been held in Villa Devoto prison for nearly two years, said the system had "done nothing" for her brother. "My brother has been in jail for a year and nine months. There is nothing in there, he was supposed to be in there for only eight months and he is still in there without a trial date," Susana said. Some 2-thousand prisoners are held without sentence in more than 12-thousand prisons throughout the country's capital province. "He is hurt, we are all hurt. They are as hurt in there as we are out here," Susana said. Preventive imprisonment is applied to suspects who authorities believe could escape judicial prosecution. According to official 2005 census documents, nearly 32-thousand prisoners have been held in the Buenos Aires prisons without trial. The hunger strike began twelve days ago in Penal Unit #9 in the city of La Plata.
