14/10/2015 2015 Series of Lectures on Astrophysics and Cosmology: science of the cosmos, science in the cosmos Lecture: "The Amazing Liquid Xenon for Dark Matter WIMPs Detection" Synopsis: A variety of experiments attempts to find out what the Dark Matter that fills our Universe is made of, resulting in a vibrant field of research. This talk will review what we know (or do not know) about the nature of Dark Matter, before introducing the basic principles for its direct detection in laboratory-scale detectors, focusing on Weakly Inter- acting Massive Particles. I will give an overview of the field and concentrate on one class of experiments using liquid xenon which has shown the greatest promise to-date for direct detection of WIMPs in the Milky Way.
