‘Really Stupes, a song about Balatro, a game with no narrative?’ Ah, but what if it was actually less about Balatro and more a reflection on the nature of existing within a system centred on the constant chase for validation via the unending quest for higher numbers, and the futility of it all in the face of our finite existence as human beings? You know, classic Stupendium fodder. This project began as something small-scale to test out something large – a robotic motion control arm that I bought! I first thought about getting a motion control arm for a different project that actually fell through, but I couldn’t get it out of my head. I needed one! So, this video is the debut of our newest team member Armando! He is a Cinebot Mini from Mark Roberts Motion Control, and I love him. He was very expensive, so expect to see him a lot more in future shoots. (Why yes, I do personify all of my equipment, you should meet Cameron the camera.) This shoot was very much a trial by fire. We got trained to use the arm by the wonderful Nigel from Mark Roberts, but having our first real test of it be one continuous 3-and-a-half-minute camera move with about 60 different passes for different characters that need to be perfectly aligned may not have been the best idea I’ve ever had. Especially since the initial idea for this video was just, ‘what can I use the motion control arm for? I could play poker with myself!’ But hey, we made it work (barely) and in the next video, maybe we’ll just use Armando for a few shots instead. Thanks to the whole crew that wrangled the arm and made this all possible, especially everyone that stayed up very late on the last shoot day to get everything finished. And special thanks to CK9C for the beautiful sax solo that I badly mimed along to! ----- Check out the full Stupendium originals playlist for all of my original songs!
