Beatriz was only 15 years old when she became pregnant, but there were complications during the labor. The prolonged and obstructed delivery left her with a childbirth injury, obstetric fistula - a hole between the birth canal and the bladder or rectum. Obstetric fistula affects some 2,500 women in Mozambique each year. It can cause incontinence, leading to social ostracization and attendant psychological issues like depression. If women try and fall pregnant again, fistula will often lead to a stillbirth. Beatriz suffered with fistula for 6 years until she received a reparative surgery that changed her life. “I don’t know how to express what was in my heart,” she recalled. “I had emotions I don’t know how to describe.” With the right efforts, we can #EndFistula.
