Ocular implants aren’t just futuristic gadgets, they’re already reshaping what it means to see. In this video, we (Emma and Anish) take you inside our original research on the science, ethics, and future of ocular technology. We break down how devices like the Argus II and PRIMA retinal implants restore sight by converting light into electrical signals the brain can interpret. But we also push further, exploring what happens when implants go beyond restoration to enhance human perception. Could we someday see heat, sound, or digital information through our eyes? We think so, and that possibility opens the door to a whole new definition of vision. We highlight how institutions like MIT, Stanford, USC, and ASU act as the invisible hand behind these innovations, not just by building the tech, but by shaping the values, policies, and priorities that surround it. This isn’t just about medical progress, it’s about social transformation. If enhanced sight becomes possible, who will get access? Will it be regulated like healthcare or sold like wearable tech? And how do we make sure it’s used responsibly? This is our conversation on the future of sight, where biology, technology, and society collide. Watch now and see what’s coming. Created by students. Informed by science. Rooted in a vision of the future. ____ Video Chapters 00:00 – Introduction: Vision Rewired 00:20 – Evolution of the Eye 01:10 – The Biology of Vision 01:27 – The University as the Invisible Hand: MIT, Stanford, USC 02:09 – How the Argus II Works 03:20 – Limits of Current Implants 04:05 – Enter PRIMA: Solar-Powered Vision 05:10 – Future Vision: Cortex, Color & Ethics 05:45 – Conclusion: Who Gets to See the Future? ____ Acknowledgements Thank you to Matt Robinson, Jeff Aguila, & Ricardo Leon on the ASU EdPlus Digital Learning Team for their help filming this video.
