'Does This Ancient Roman Artefact Proves Gladiators Fought in Roman Britain?' The renowned Colchester Gladiator Vase dates back to 175 AD and remains one of the most remarkable antiquarian objects ever found in Britain. Discovered in a Roman-era grave in 1853, the vase depicts a gladiator battle between two named fighters, Memnon and Valentinus (both stage names). Unique in this case is the depiction of a swastika on a gladiators shield, seemingly odd to us now, but back in Roman Britain it was a symbol of good luck. The vase depicts many other interesting seems, such as an animal hunt, all of which are discussed by History Hit presenter and host of The Ancients podcast Tristan Hughes, and Glynn Davis in this recorded podcast, filmed at Colchester Museums.
