How Gangu Village Is Growing Beans the Organic Way. In the quiet fields of Gangu Village, Asembo, Siaya county, Kenya something green and powerful is taking root. Farmers here are increasingly turning to green army beans a nutritious, quick-cooking bean variety that’s not just filling plates but also transforming local agriculture. What’s more inspiring? They’re doing it using fully organic methods like Tithonia diversifolia for soil health and papaya leaves to keep pests away. #Beans #Kenya #How Here’s a look at how we are planting, growing, and harvesting green army beans the sustainable way and why this legume is winning hearts and markets across the region. Planting Green Army Beans: The Basics Green army beans do best in well-drained loamy soils and areas with moderate rainfall just like the conditions in Asembo. ✅ Spacing Matters To give each plant room to thrive, Gangu farmers use the following spacing: 50 cm between rows 15 cm between plants This layout improves air circulation, reduces disease risk, and supports healthy yields. 🌿 Growing the Organic Way We have embraced natural inputs to grow our beans without chemicals, using what’s already abundant in our environment. 💚 Boosting Growth with Tithonia diversifolia Also known as the Mexican sunflower, Tithonia is chopped and mixed into the soil as green manure or used as a compost mulch. It’s rich in nutrients, especially nitrogen, which promotes: Lush vegetative growth Strong root systems Dark green, healthy leaves Tithonia grows wild around Gangu, making it an affordable and sustainable fertilizer. 🐞 Keeping Pests Away with Papaya Leaf Spray Chemical pesticides? Not here. In our farming projects in Gangu village we use papaya leaf extract, a natural pesticide that controls aphids and whiteflies. DIY Recipe: 1. Crush fresh papaya leaves. 2. Soak them in water overnight. 3. Strain and spray the liquid on your plants. It’s safe for the environment and for you. 🌾 Harvest Time Green army beans mature in 60 to 75 days. Once the leaves start to yellow and pods turn dry, it’s time to harvest. Harvesting: Beans are hand-picked and sun-dried. Threshing & Storage: After drying, pods are threshed and stored in cool, dry conditions. Ready for the market With good organic care, yields can reach 8–10 bags per acre a rewarding return for farmers using low-cost inputs. Why Green Army Beans Are a Game-Changer They’re easy to cook, rich in nutrients, and perfect for stews, soups, salads even porridge. In homes where firewood or charcoal is scarce, the fast cooking time is a game-changer. A Model for Sustainable Farming The story of green army beans in Gangu Village is more than just a farming success. It’s proof that *local knowledge, organic resources, and sustainable methods* can build food security and empower rural communities. Whether you’re a smallholder farmer, a nutritionist, or just a fan of good food... green army beans deserve a place in your garden and your kitchen. 💬 Have you tried growing or cooking with green army beans?
