Hot off his Project One adventure, and still recovering from his appendectomy, he felt the need to make a statement. And a statement, it certainly made. Willem: “After surgery, I was out of the running for a while. As soon as I had recovered, I happily continued where I left off. But there was a difference. Along with my popularity rising, so came the negative feedback. People commented on social media and online forums, and it was hard getting used to. I mean, everything in my career was going so well, and then all of a sudden you get to deal with that. But then it hit me. I thought, why not let it inspire me? And so, I made a statement with ‘Just Say My Name’. It’s something that I would probably never do today. A statement with the guiding thought: If you’re doing well and you manage to reach a lot of people, dealing with the critics is part of it as well. Luckily, I’ve found ways to deal with that.
