IN THIS EPISODE: A look at one of the oldest greatest comic strips, “Little Nemo in Slumberland” by Winsor McCay. McCay drew this strip for many years and it was regarded in its time as one of the best drawn strips ever. McCay also made one of the earliest animated films, “Gertie the Dinosaur” which he drew on paper painstakenly drawing Gertie and the backgrounds on one sheet of paper, before there were acetate cels. Tons of drawings. He made a short animation film to show how he made the animation as well. You can see it on YouTube, just search for Gertie the Dinosaur. To see his comic strips is a real treat. Very intricate drawings, lessons in perspective and composition. He also animated Nemo and his friends. A very talented man. I don’t know if these books are still around, the older ones were purchased in the 80s, but if you search out the used book stores you may find them.
