SOUNDBITE (Indonesian) Mohammad Assegaff, lawyer for Abu Bakar Bashir: "Before we got to meet with the cleric, we learnt the fact that there was violence, and now the cleric has been taken away. (by police) We regret this incident." 24. Bashir leaving prison van and being taken back into police building STORYLINE: On the day of his scheduled release from prison, police on Friday re-arrested a militant cleric who allegedly heads the al-Qaida-linked Jemaah Islamiyah terror group and whisked him away for questioning over a series of deadly bombings in the country. Dozens of Abu Bakar Bashir's supporters outside Jakarta's Salemba prison threw rocks and bottles at police in riot gear, who responded with water canon and tear gas. Several people, including at least one officer, sustained minor injuries. There were no immediate reports of the protesters being arrested. Indonesian authorities said earlier this week that Bashir would be freed on Friday after serving an 18-month term for minor immigration offences. But in a sudden about-face, prosecutors said on Thursday they would issue an arrest warrant for the 66-year-old Bashir on suspicion of approving a string of bombings dating back to 2000 that included the October 12, 2002, Bali attack which killed 202 people. Bashir's lawyers have said the re-arrest is part of an American-led conspiracy to keep him behind bars despite a lack of fresh evidence. A number of Indonesian Muslim leaders, including the head of the country's top Islamic council and the Islamic-based Party of Justice and Prosperity, have also pleaded for his release. Bashir's fate is a sensitive political issue in Indonesia, where authorities have sought to balance the need to remain aggressive in the US-led war on terror while not appearing to cave in to pressure from the United States and Australia. Officials have taken their case to the media, arguing in interviews on Thursday that they have testimony from scores of witnesses from Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore who can prove Bashir is the Jemaah Islamiyah leader. Authorities said they have recently uncovered reams of new documents implicating Bashir, including a letter signed by Islamic extremists in the Philippines that allegedly identifies him as the leader of Jemaah Islamiyah. That letter was written by two alleged militants who are currently detained in Indonesia - Mustafa, said to be a top Jemaah Islamiyah operative who had trained in al-Qaida camps in Afghanistan and his Malaysian associate, Nasir Abbas.
