Indian Railways has taken a historic step towards sustainable transportation. In December 2024, the country will begin its first hydrogen-powered train trials, marking a new direction in rail travel. This train operates without the need for diesel or electricity and emits no harmful pollutants. It is a significant milestone in Indian Railways' aim to become a "net-zero carbon emitter" by 2030. The train generates power by using water as its primary resource. Hydrogen fuel cells produce electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, with only steam and water being emitted, ensuring no harmful pollutants are released into the environment. Compared to diesel engines, this train produces 60% less noise, making it not only environmentally friendly but also offering passengers a more comfortable experience. The train can travel at speeds of up to 140 kilometers per hour and cover distances of 1,000 kilometers on a single tank of hydrogen fuel. This makes it particularly suitable for long-distance rail routes. The cost of manufacturing each hydrogen train is approximately ₹80 crore, and Indian Railways is investing heavily in the construction of specialized hydrogen storage and refueling stations. If the trials are successful in December 2024, Indian Railways plans to launch 35 hydrogen trains nationwide by 2025. These trains will have the same speed and capacity as diesel-powered trains but will cause no environmental harm. This project further advances Indian Railways' environmental goals, reducing air pollution caused by diesel engines and promoting cleaner transportation. It is setting new standards in the global railway industry. The steps taken by Indian Railways will be a revolutionary change in the construction of green infrastructure.
