Sennett Devermont, also known as Mr. Checkpoint, is a community activist and founder of Always Film The Police. He recently spoke on Sway In The Morning about the case of LaKeith Smith, a 15-year-old boy who was sentenced to 65 years for the murder of his accomplice during a burglary, despite not having fired the fatal shot. Sennett Devermont’s interview discussed the importance of filming the police, our rights and laws, and the importance of jury duty. Always Film The Police was created as a means to hold police accountable for their actions, and to clear up any misconceptions the public holds about their rights. Through decades of TV shows like Cops, police have been depicted as noble heroes who serve and protect, but the reality is that many minorities are targeted and treated unfairly. By filming encounters with police, citizens hold them accountable and help change the narrative about the communities they serve. When it comes to interacting with police, Sennett emphasizes the importance of exercising your rights, but also complying with the law in order to keep any situation safe. He stresses that this can only be achieved with proper knowledge. Sennett creates resources to educate citizens on how to interact with police properly, using your phone, body language, and your words in a strategic way that will help you gain a better outcome. In the interview, Sennett also talked about the importance of taking jury duty seriously and actively wanting to be a part of it. Although many people view it as a burden, it’s an opportunity to be a part of someone’s life in your community. The more people are knowledgeable, informed and vigilant, the more they can hold police accountable for their actions. By being a part of the jury, every citizen can do their part in creating positive change. Sennett Devermont’s mission with Always Film The Police is to bridge the gap between police and communities they serve through knowledge and accountability. We must be informed of our rights, understand how to comply with the law, and be proactive about making a difference in our communities. We need to change the conversation from “how to get out of jury duty” to “how can we make a difference." With Sennett’s guidance, we can all play a role in creating a more just and fair world.
