Synchronised swimming (often abbreviated to synchro) is one of the main aquatic sports included into the Regulations of Olympics, world and the continental aquatics championships in 1980. Synchro is an artistic sport performed mostly by women. The competitions are carried out in the form of a varied all-around. A distinctive feature of the sport is subjective judging, as for example in figure skating or rhythmic gymnastics. Synchronised swimming is a versatile discipline combining elements of aquatics, rhythmic gymnastics, acrobatics, choreography and aerobics. At the turn of the 20th century, synchronised swimming was known as water ballet. Synchro first emerged in Canada in the 1920s. Many swim clubs were formed around that time, and the sport simultaneously developed within several countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the USA. Synchronised swimming was an exhibition sport at the Olympic Games from 1948 to 1968, then it became a Summer Olympic sport at Los Angeles 1984. The first synchronised swimming events were solo and duet. Stay tuned with FISU and follows us on our different social platforms!
