Playlist with all GLOBALNEWS here: / @globalnewspolitik A recent row involving Labour MP Dawn Butler has sparked a heated debate in British politics. Butler retweeted a post by Nigerian journalist Nels Abbey that criticised Kemi Badenoch's rise in the Conservative Party, calling her victory "white supremacy in black". The post, which Butler later deleted, included "Seven rules for surviving a Kemi Badenoch victory" and implied that Badenoch's leadership represented a "victory for racism". Former Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng and other Conservative MPs have since called for disciplinary action against Butler, with Kwarteng claiming that Butler's retweet was both incendiary and "hateful". He claimed Butler's comments were a form of "race baiting" and demanded that Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer take action by suspending Butler's party whip. Kwarteng pointed to previous incidents, such as the suspension of Labour MP Rupa Haque, as grounds for Starmer to tighten party discipline. Other Conservative Party figures, including former chancellor Nadhim Zahawi and MP Ben Obese-Jackety, condemned Butler's retweet, calling it a test of Starmer's commitment to fair political discourse. Obese-Jackety questioned whether the Labour Party would excuse Butler's comments without taking action. Despite calls for a response, Starmer has not removed the party whip from Butler. His office noted that Butler had rescinded the retweet and reiterated Starmer's earlier statement celebrating Badenoch's historic achievement as the first black woman to lead a major political party in Europe.
