SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Father Superior Porfiriy (orthodox monks only use first names): "The return of the Czar Bell should be viewed as a call for - and the symbol of - repentance. The first, original, bell was the symbol of Russia's greatness, but it is difficult to talk about greatness and spirituality in Russia's current state." 9. Church domes 10. Pigeons with church at the background STORYLINE: Monks and Russian Orthodox believers have welcomed the arrival of a gargantuan bell at the Trinity St. Sergius Monastery as part of a project to replace bells destroyed under the Soviet Union's atheism campaign. The 72-ton (79 tonne) Czar Bell - more than five times as heavy as London's Big Ben - is to be hung in the tower of the monastery outside Moscow, one of Russian Orthodoxy's holiest sites. The Czar Bell is a replica of a 1748 bell by the same name destroyed during Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin's campaign against religion in the 1930's. It is the third bell to be replaced in the monastery, where some 40 bells were wrecked. After a three-day trip by truck from its casting site in St. Petersburg the bell stood outside the white crenelated walls of the monastery, waiting to be hoisted into the bell tower. At the end of an outdoor service commemorating its arrival, believers kissed the bell or placed their foreheads on it. Monastery officials said the bell will be ringing by Easter. Under Stalin, thousands of church bells were smashed and re-smelted across the Soviet Union as churches were razed and monks executed. Churches that were not torn down were used as breweries, factories, secret police facilities and for other purposes. The collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 brought a strong revival in the church.
