A better way to knit German short rows [and why yours may look all wrong]

There are two different ways to knit German short rows and this tutorial explores the differences between the two and when and where to use which version. Basically, it boils down to slipping a stitch purlwise with yarn in front and then pulling (quite strongly) on the working yarn to create a double stitch. Later on, you will decrease the double stitch by knitting it together. So far so good. But when you do this process on the knitside, the result will be a slightly twisted stitch. To avoid this, you have to slip the stitch knitwise and knit it together through back loop later on. However, while this might create a balanced stitch for the knitside, it might not always be the neatest way. So, this tutorial explores the differences between the two different ways to knit German short rows and when and how to use them.
