Walt Disney Accused Workers Of Being Commies When They Tried To Unionize His Company

Two videos are presented in this clip regarding communists in America in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The first is a newsreel report that presents American communists being arrested in 1947 during the post-war Red Scare. Walt Disney was an outspoken opponent of communism during the Cold War's Red Scare era. He publicly abhorred communism and began to accuse his own staff of being communists after they attempted to unionize and went on a strike against his company. The second clip presents Walt Disney testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) which was set up by Congress to find Communists and root them out of government and industry. Disney provided HUAC with information about union activity at his studios and accused the head of the movement to create a union of being a communist. The man's name was Herbert Sorrell and he was a union leader and organizer. In this clip from October 24, 1947, Disney began his testimony, naming many of his former employees whom he believed were communists. Most of these men were the leaders of the movement to organize Disney workers into a union. Said Disney: "Sorrell was a Communist because of all the things that I had heard and having seen his name appearing on a number of Commie front things. When he pulled the strike, the first people to smear me and put me on the unfair list were all of the Commie front organizations." Some time after this testimony, each of the men mentioned was cleared of communist charges, but many were unofficially blacklisted from the Hollywood film industry for years to follow.
